This is a group of fourteen small islands separated from the western coast of the Istrian peninsula by the Strait of Fažana. They are located in the strip between Pula and Rovinj. The most important are Veliki Brijun and Mali Brijun, but another important islet is Vanga. Its geography of reddish rocky cliffs makes them known as the Red islands. In them lies the Brijuni National Park, which houses a rich biodiversity and numerous protected species. On the island of Veliki Brijun you can make trips to the Safari Park, nine acres where you can enjoy exotic animals like zebras, antelopes and elephants, living in freedom. There are numerous ruins of various periods, including most notably the Church of Santa Maria or the Castrum.
For indulge the eyes, nothing beats the landscape from the Belvedere lookout. Navigating this area, you will find well equipped ports and some of the most beautiful medieval venetian towns where it is worth trying the famous Cicarij cheese.
