The accommodation
It is ideal for couples looking for a different kind of holiday in a rustic atmosphere. According to the locals, it is the oldest house in the area, with a traditional L-shaped structure around its large courtyards presided over by the rim of an old cistern. Its gardens, bounded by local stone walls, and its barbecue, sweeten the trade winds that enter the island in this area and bring us health and wealth with their sea of freshwater clouds. The thick stone walls and the large plank ceilings give the house coolness in the summer and warmth in the winter, making the interior very cosy, both in its two bedrooms and in the living room-kitchen, whose views over the sea are unbeatable. From the house and its patios you can enjoy splendid sunsets, which are unforgettable in this part of the western part of the Canary archipelago. The photos that decorate the interior walls under its impressive roof made of tea wood (the heart of the Canarian pine tree), take you on a curious journey through the traditional ways of life and different places in the municipality of Villa de Garafía, a municipality that lends its name to a new planet called "Garafía-1" discovered in 2006 from the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory and which is outside our solar system, approximately one thousand light years from Earth. The house can be reached on foot via a small path of 75 metres. Holday Cottage Los Hondos has 80m2 and is distributed in:
- Double bedroom with 2 single beds
- Double bedroom with double bed
- Fully equipped kitchen with: electric coffee machine, fridge, sandwich maker, 4 ring gas hob, electric oven, blender, juicer, microwave, stereo system.
- Bathroom with shower and hairdryer
- Integrated living-dining-kitchen area
- Wood-burning and electric cooker
- Fiber optic, plasma TV and satellite
- Sea view Scattered. Very cosy little house of 80m2 in Santo Domingo, centre of the village of Garafía, about 300m above sea level, next to a royal road. The large municipality of Garafía occupies 102 km2 in the northwest corner of the island, stretching from sea to summit between the deep ravines of Franceses and Izcagua.
Its rugged topography is influenced by the trade winds; in fact, the old windmills are a typical feature of the Garafía landscape. The vegetation cover of fayal-brezal and pine forest was historically exploited as the main economic resource.
After the Castilian conquest, the former canton of Tagalgen was mainly populated by Portuguese settlers, many of whom were Jews expelled from their country. The lands in the unallotted royal midlands were ceded to the peasants from 1579 onwards with the obligation to pay a fifth of the produce obtained; the Quintos system lasted until a few years ago.
In 1812 the municipality was acquired and in 1906 King Alfonso XIII granted it the title of Villa.
The municipality's economic activity is centred on agriculture and livestock farming, generating an important cheese industry with a centre for maturing and marketing the product. However, Rural Tourism is undoubtedly the most innovative sector; the quality of the accommodation on offer and the beautiful landscapes are a guarantee for this prosperous sector.
On the other hand, the peaks of Garafía are a point of reference for the international astrophysics community in the quest for greater knowledge of the universe.
