Setting

The municipality of Estepona is almost entirely dominated by the majestic Sierra Bermeja mountain range, where the Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja natural park is located.
The rural character of the town is reflected in the festival of San Isidro Labrador (May 15). In the first week of July the fiestas of the patron saint of the town are celebrated both in the fairgrounds and in the city centre, and a few days later (16 July) the residents of Estepona worship the Virgin of Carmen with a moving sea procession, a tradition that can be found all along the coast of the province of Málaga.
The eighteenth century Virgen de los Remedios church in the village centre is not to be missed. Its interior consists of three naves covered by vaults with a dome over the transept, and on the façade you can admire a beautiful stone portal.
It is also worth seeing the Torre del Reloj (Clock Tower), which was part of an old parish church that was built in the late fifteenth century. The 15th century walls of the Castle and the ruins of the Castillo el Nicio in El Padrón are historically noteworthy, although many of the original structures have not been preserved. There are also some impressive manor houses or palaces dating from the 18th century, such as the house of the Marquis of Mondéjar or the Casa de la Borrega.
Along the coast, which extends on both sides of Estepona, you can see a series of watchtowers built between the 15th and 16th centuries that were erected to defend against the attacks of the barbarian pirates so frequent at that time. There are seven of Muslim and Castilian origin. They are all located on the coast and extend for 21 kilometres.
