The care environment of Puerto de Vega was worthy of a valuable award, the "Exemplary Village of Asturias" in 1995.
Puerto de Vega has always been linked to fishing. Formerly it was an active commercial and whaling port and at present it continues dedicated to the fishing activity.

The town of Puerto de Vega preserves a picturesque fishing port, with centennial battlements. In addition, it has other places of interest: the viewpoint of the Baluarte, with 18th century cannons; the viewpoint of the Riba, a reminder of the old whalers; the chapels of the Atalaya, Socorro, Carmen and Lebrón; the old emblazoned houses, among which the one of Trelles stands out, where the illustrated G. M. de Jovellanos died (1744- 1811); the hometowns of Juan Pérez Villamil (1754-1824), and that of Álvaro de Navia Osorio (1684-1732), the houses of Indians with the Casino, built by the architect Manuel del Busto (1874-1948), and the park Benigno Blanco; and the parish church of Santa Marina (1730-1749), with excellent Baroque and Rococo altarpieces by José Bernardo de la Meana and the oldest body in the north of the peninsula (16th century). The centenary square of Cupid, the neuralgic axis on which the primitive fishing village grew, oozes nobility and old flavor on all four sides, which makes it a favorite spot for painters and poets
