Setting
Cala Gonone is a large tourist village in the center of the Gulf of Orosei, the seaside capital of Barbagia, more or less halfway along the eastern coast of Sardinia; the village lies on the slopes of Monte Codula Manna, an extinct volcano, and is surrounded by a magnificent circle of limestone mountains, rich in woods. Its beach, its small port, its numerous hotels and restaurants, its artisan shops, its scenic beauty, its climate and the numerous leisure and cultural events, including international ones, which take place there, make it popular all over the year. The spectacular natural location of Calagonone is best appreciated by arriving there from Dorgali: upon exiting a tunnel that pierces the bastion of the Bardia and Tului Mountains you pass from a mountain landscape strongly marked by asperities, by spiers, by jagged ridges, to a grandiose marine landscape with infinite horizons towards the blue waters and bordered towards the land by a fantastic backdrop of mountains, holm oak forests, valleys. The numerous quality tourist businesses and the port make it an ideal starting point for countless excursions to the whole of Barbagia, both by sea and by land. A special consortium of boatmen organizes, in collaboration with the municipality of Dorgali, the transport of visitors along the entire coast; We take care of private boats and dinghies, and the latter are also rented in the port. By boat it is possible to reach the famous beach of Cala Luna, a jewel so precious that it requires adequate protection, and the Bue Marino cave: the cave, which is part of the karst system of the Supramonte massif, opens a small entrance towards the sea and hides in its kilometre-long bowels astonishing natural treasures, as well as some families of monk seals, the last specimens of the distant glacial eras of the Mediterranean. ala Gonone gives easy access to the locations in the southern part of the Gulf of Orosei, immersed in the typical Ogliastra landscape, characterized by the extraordinary combination of the harsh rocky nature and the crystalline transparency of the sea, which produces a wide series of wonders, with vertical cliffs on the water and wooded slopes inhabited by important avifauna.
Activities and attractions
The beaches: the beaches of Calagonone, towards the north, are Palmasera-S'abba Meica and Cala Cartoe; a little further north are the beaches of the Orosei area (the beaches of Marina di Orosei - Ostalla stretch for over 4 km, mostly solitary even in mid-August, with the Cedrino system of ponds behind them, very important naturalistically for the avifauna that frequents them; Cala Liberotto-Cala Ginepro, with its green pine forests up to the white beach, up to the beautiful beaches of Sa Curcurica and Bidderosa, which are part of an area protected by the State Forestry Company). Towards the south, Ziu Martine, Fuili and Zio Santoru. Cala Luna is perhaps the most beautiful beach in the Mediterranean, due to the presence of 6 enormous caves and the oleander forest located near the pond. Beyond Cala Luna, the coast of the Gulf of Orosei is easily accessible from Cala Gonne: Cala Sisine, Cala Biriola, Cala Mariolu, Cala Goloritzè, dominated by the unmistakable profile of the wild coast of Capo di Monte Santo.
