The accommodation
The Casa del Cuartel, a landmark house, belongs to the Fuerteventura Biosphere Reserve, Rural Quality and Ecotourism Local Brand. Located on Calle La Orilla, it is an accommodation located in the historic town of La Oliva, north of Fuerteventura, 15 minutes by car from the nearest beach of Corralejo and Cotillo and 30 minutes from Puerto del Rosario and the Airport. Its construction dates back to the 18th century, in response to the type of Majorera house in the shape of a cube, with a patio located inside that contains a water cistern. It consists of 2 independent houses, one with 2 bedrooms and one with 1 bedroom, each with a large terrace. The Casa Emblemática is located a few meters from the historic center of the city of La Oliva, the center of political and social activity on the island for many years and an environment full of architectural traces that tell about the history of this Canary Island.
The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, whose origins date back to the 16th century, is one of the largest on the island, or the Cilla Museum, a 19th century building that is a clear example of traditional architecture and is now dedicated to displaying everything related to the Cilla grain. The Casa del Inglés was built in the 18th century, a time when many agricultural and commercial bourgeoisie settled in La Oliva.
In addition, the island offers many hiking routes through its natural landscapes of gentle dunes and mountains, such as the Tindaya Mountain trail, or the Isla de Lobos trail. There are also many companies dedicated to water sports, surfing or kitesurfing, scuba diving, canoeing... the clear Atlantic waters of Fuerteventura allow them all. The municipality covers the entire northern area of the island, including among its natural wonders the Natural Park of the Dunes of Corralejo and Isla de Lobos, with incredible and evocative landscapes of golden sands and beautiful beaches with transparent waters of surprising blue and turquoise tones, as well as the magnificent volcanic formation of Bayuyo, an authentic geological extension of the island, which can be visited through the trails laid out for this purpose.
La Oliva, which was the capital of Fuerteventura until 1880, was the centre of political and social life, which is vividly witnessed by the stately buildings, among which the Case de los Coroneles, an exceptional example of colonial architecture, stands out not only in the area but also on the island. Founded in 1650 by the Cabrera Bethencourt family, whose coat of arms can still be seen on the Portico of the main façade.
Called by the locals "Casa de la Marquesa", it was the residence of the leaders of the Majorera militias as well as their barracks. According to the locals "it has as many doors and windows as there are days in the year", its stately and historic character can still be perceived in the surroundings, especially in its church, which houses a very valuable altarpiece by Juan de Miranda.
Also noteworthy, this time for its ineffable maritime flavour, are the 18th century Torre del Tostón, the exquisite friendliness of the inhabitants of El Cotillo and the versatility of its beaches, which allow for everything from absolute relaxation to the practice of any water sport, although Corralejo and its fantastic beaches are the areas of the municipality best equipped with infrastructure for the practice of sports such as windsurfing, jet skiing, scuba diving... etc., to which are added the perfect conditions of temperature, transparency and seabed.
These characteristics have allowed Corralejo to become a tourist centre of unquestionable quality.
In terms of crafts, the town of Lajares has become renowned for its exquisite hand-embroidered and openwork work.
Other towns are: El Cotillo, El Roque, Corralejo, Villaverde, La Oliva, La Caldereta, Vallebrón, Tindaya, Majanicho, Isla de Lobos.
Highlighting as sites of historical and cultural interest the House of the Colonels, House of the Cilla, House of the English, Caves of Villaverde, Mountain of Tindaya, Monument to Unamuno, The Castle (El Cotillo), the Parish Church of Our Lady of Candelaria, the hermitages of Our Lady of the Glorious Sorrows, San Pedro and San Juan, San Antonio de Padua, Our Lady of the Good Journey, San Vicente Ferrer, Our Lady of Charity, Canarian Art Center, Art Galleries.
