Setting
The house is on a leafy quiet street on San Andres Golf overlooking the sixth fairway.
San Andres is a low density urbanisation surrounded by 18 fairways of Campano Golf with lakes and other water features. There is a restaurant/tapas in the Campano Golf Club. Not far away is exit 15 for the very underutilised E5-A48 motorway. Jerez airport is about 45 minutes, Seville and Gibraltar both about 1 hour 45 minutes and Malaga is about 2 hours 45 minutes - all easy driving.
San Andres is surrounded by farmland and pine woods; the nearest beach is the beautiful Roche-Barrosa beach at El Torre de Puerco [Lomo de Sancti Petri].
The closest shops are at El Colorado: petrol station, pharmacy, a number of restaurants, a good sized supermarket with in-house bakery, a newagents and several small shops.
This is a video link to San Andres and the nearby beach at Lomo de Sancti Petri, the pretty fishing village of Conil de la Frontera and beautiful Cadiz
Activities and attractions
Conil is about 15 minutes drive and chiclana [with its wonderful covered food market] is also about 15 minutes. Nearby are several championship standard golf courses, horse riding stables, go-karting, an archery centre, tennis and padel tennis courts, a kite surfing centre and marina.
The ancient city of cadiz is jut 20 minutes drive, also nearby is jerez with its sherry bodegas and famous dressage school. Seville with its soaring giralda and magnificent cathedral with nearby alcazar is an easy daytrip. All around are the hilltop towns such as arcos, medina sidonia, vejer and tarifa. Tangiers is just 35 minutes by high speed ferry from tarifa . . .
A suggestion and small selection of what is available locally . . . .
Theatres, concerts, cinema, exhibitions, local ferias and events
this area is alive with old traditions and culture and an excellent monthly guide is guiadecadiz
flamenco
during the spring, early summer and autumn you can often see flamenco – spontaneous or formal at the village ferias. Heats for the national competition also take place in cadiz old town close to the gardens. Also in the theatres such as the cortes theatre in san fernando or in chiclana or cadiz or cordoba but also in the open air on a summer weekend by the guzman tower in conil.
Situated in the heart of cadiz old town not far from the town hall is a permanent venue . . . . And this troupe are very good, very passionate with a guitarist, cantor, one male dancer and two female dancers . . . Best to book and to book a table close to the stage. It is possible to eat beforehand and the performance starts usually at 9.30.
Ferias, bullfighting and bull running
firmly entrenched in the spanish way of life . . . . . . The hills around the lajanda plain are often covered with herds of cattle and fighting bulls . . .
Chiclana has a bull ring, the bull ring at ronda dates back to roman times and at alcala de los gazules [a nearby hilltop village] there is bull running during their feria.
The local tourist offices are best to find where the nearest ferias are . . . . El colorado’s takes place in mid-june and conil’s and tarifa’s is early in september . . .

restaurants – a selection . . . .
Franciscos fontanilla beach
the furthest of two with the blue tables. Need to book for lunch and supper especially if you want a table nearest the sea – right on the beach. Very good seafood.
La ola fontanilla beach
good laid back beach bar: bbq, tapas bar, live music as sun sets just beyond francisco’s
la castilleria, santa lucia
open air restaurant specialising in meats – good portions
must book one week in advance in summer.
Take the road to vejer; motorway peters out and a few hundred yards later is a filter to the left. Take this and do an immediate “u” turn. As you go back along the road no more than a couple of hundred yards you’ll see telephone cables strung across the road and immediately a small turning to santa lucia. Continue up to the church square and park. Walking to the left past the monument you’ll see steps up to the restaurant and hear some light jazz above the water rushing off the old roman viaduct . . . Select your choice cut of meat for the main course – starters and sweets also good. Need to book at peak times [mid to late afternoon and late evening] – believe office closed on fridays.
El rezon
on the way to fontanilla beach – very nice environment, excellent food. In my opinion the menu at this restaurant is one of the best in conil . . . . . Owned by the same family who own francisco’s fontanilla
el tergal
extremely spanish, extremely unrefined but brilliant seafood. Located at back of stony car park on road up from conil fishing port/fish auction yards to the roche lighthouse [brilliant views across conil to el palmar and trafalgar]. Just turn up – could be closed, could be open but usually is [in summer].
El timon
in roche, overlooking the beach. Great for morning coffee or evening drink on terrace, excellent cuisine . . . Overlooking the ocean. Very nice family - keen sailors.
On the headland to the far right of fontanilla beach [can be accessed from beach or top road leading to flamenco hotel] – good food and the mirador is a good spot for sunset.
Patria restaurant
on the way to vejer [close to la muela]
antonio’s in el colorado
good for a late meal / to avoid eating in – leg of lamb is superb; aim for outside or at the back to avoid smokers around the bar.
El jardin del califa, vejer
main entrance is in plaza espana. There is often parking in the square but if not go through the square and down the hill where there is a large car park and it is then a short walk up the hill – when you see to your left a pretty calle full of flowers this is the courtyard entrance.
Good moroccan food, music, old environment.
Sundry
conil friday morning “street” market
good for dried fruits, dates, nuts, olives, herbs, spices etc plus beach clothes, antiques/bric-a-brac, ordinary clothes, shoes etc etc] on the road to fontanilla beach not far from the mercadona.
Conil in the evening
best to approach via fontanilla [as centre pedestrianised] and turn left at the sea then right at the mini roundabout and park along the promenade and walk up to santa catalina square.
There are arts and crafts stalls and a stage beside the guzman tower [often at weekends some good flamenco and/or singers with backing groups] and if you walk up the alley way beside the old police station you come to calle hospital and a row of very good ice cream parlours which the kids will also enjoy - even at midnight there are plenty of children running around.
Food shopping
nearby el colorado has everything you might need: a couple of supermarkets [one with an in-house bakery], chemist, newsagent, traditional restaurants, a takeaway pizzeria, estancos, veterinary surgeon and a number of small shops.
Really worthwhile, however, is the mercado de abastos in chiclana [opened in march 09] for fresh meat, fresh fish [not mondays], fresh and cooked meat, cheeses, bread, tinned specialities, fruit and vegetables. Parking is in the multi-storey car park in basement [simplest to go down one level. Beforehand we always have breakfast in the square outside . .
When driving into chiclana turn left at the roundabout before the bridge and continue along a narrow road with the bandstand and river on right and take first turn left [signposted mercado de abastos]. At the end of that road on the left is the entrance to the car park.
Further afield
la tangerina, rue du sultan,tangiers
latangerina
lovely riad, very nice people [farida, her sister fouzia and farida’s husband juergen], brilliant ocean views from roof terrace in middle of medina next to the kasbah and soukh. Short journey from port. Only 40 mins by high speed ferry from tarifa [an hour or so from san andres/conil]. Best to drop off passengers at gate to port then drive along the road which winds up the hill and park anywhere there that you can find space.
Tarifa itself is vibrant with heavy north african influence but still very western compared to the real thing. The hurricane hotel [on the right going to tarifa possibly mid-way is worth a stop off for coffee on the way].
Sport
wind, board and kite surfing
a good site for local conditions, centres and equipment is

Horse riding
a number of local stables – one five minutes away from san andres on the road to lomo de sancti petri, [hipica cortijo calinka]which also offers beach riding –out of season

horses: dressage
