The project, “El Camín Encatáu” in the Valle de Ardisana (Llanes) was put in motion by the Asociación La Ablanosa with the collaboration of the local government of Llanes and was inaugurated in 2007. DESCRIPTION OF THE ROUTE Round trip: 9 km. Time taken: 2 h y 15 m. Degree of difficulty: Low.
The Cuesta path:
Accesible from Llanes: The route starts next to the Hermitage of Christ (la Ermita del Cristo), in La Portilla. In order to get there we´ll have to take the deviation to Cué and Andrín at the entrance of the Town of Llanes. A few metres ahead, taking a turn to the right we´ll pass by the entrance of a camping, where from we´ll have to walk to the Hermitage. A sign will direct us to the starting point of the route to the left. The path extends over 3 km and goes around the high side of a hill, in the plain of which is situated the municipal golf course. The sight of the coast to discover all along is spectacular, including the historic centre of the Town of Llanes and its monuments, the fishing port with the creation of the Basque artist Agustín Ibarrola “The Cubes of Memory”, the Village of Cué, the pastures and shelving along the coast. Starting point: La Portilla. Finishing point: close to the Ballota Beach. Dificulty: low. Duration: 2 hours (both ways).
The Purón river route:
This route starts at Puron and finish at the source of the Purón river, with a low dificulty and 1.5 hours of duration, it's perfect for a family, children and adults. Continuing on the same road we leave a small bridge on the left and following the watercourse we reach a point where the river forks. There we´ll have to follow the left-side stream. From there until the source of the Purón River there are another 2 kilometres.
The national park of the Picos de Europa:
The Picos de Europa are made up of three great massifs, the Western Massif, the Central Massif or Los Urrieles and the Western Massif or Andara. From the 30th May 1995, the National Park of the Picos de Europa became the largest area of national park in the country. It was originally the National Park of the mountain of Covadonga, the first national park in the country. The oak, the holm oak, the beech and the holly are the tree species which are most abundant in the area. In terms of fauna, there are Leonardo vultures, chamois, roe deer, mountain cat, and with a little bit of luck you might see a capercaillie, the emblem of the Picos de Europa. There are various sites of interest to visit in the park:
The Royal Area of Covadonga. A sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Covadonga. (Cangas de Onís)
The Lakes of Covadonga (Enol y Ercina). Located in the eastern massif, el Macizo del Cornión. (Cangas de Onís)
The route along the river Cares. This walk starts at Poncebos (Cabrales) and marks the separtion between the Urrieles and the eastern massif, the Macizo del Cornión.
The viewing platform of Ordiales. This is found in the eastern massif, the Macizo del Cornión. The route begins from La Vega de Enol.
The funicular to Bulnes: This can be found at Poncebos and goes up to the village of Bulnes, even though there us a walking route which Starts from Poncebos, too.
The cliffs at la Ensenada del Gordo and the field of Bufones:
Access to these is via a footpath located to the east of Cué. These are a magnificent example of typical limestone cliffs, deeply eroded by the sea. At high tide the waves hitting the base of the cliffs produce one of the largest impacts on this section of the coast. Nearby there is an active Bufón, which can be seen from the lookout point at La Boriza, next to the municipal golf course. On the right of the cliffs, if you walk to the end of the cape, you can see the magnificent beach of Ballota and the islet of the name.
The bufones de Arenillas:
These bufones are located to the north of the village of Puertas de Vidiago. It is recommended that you leave the car here and take the pathway which leads to the cememtary. From here you head west. This field of bufones has appeared in many a film and story. It forms part of the coastal path, a walking route which runs through this part of the Llaniscan coast.
The bufones de Santiuste:
These are found in the most easterly part of the flat coastal plain of Llanes. Only a short distance from the beach at la Franca. These bufones are one of the most spectacular formations to be found in limestone cliffs. They are created in the cliffs next to the sea via little cracks in the limestone rock. The bufones comprise a cave or chamber in the rock that leads vertically upwards and here, under great pressure, seawater and air are expelled, due to the force of the tide. As a result howling jets of water shoot up to 30 metres in the air, a feature unique to this part of the coast.
The field of Bufones at Pría y Poza de las Grallas:
Access can be gained via the village of Llames, towards the west of the beach. Here a pathway of about 100 metres in length goes off towards the bufones. You can get to the sumit of la Poza de las Grallas over the field of bufones, although there is no well defined path. The vertical walls of the site are used by many sea birds as a nesting site.A walking route, called the Route of the Bufones, leaves the field of bufones and goes towards the beach at Villanueva and the beach at Cuevas del Mar. Later the route returns to Llames, going in a big circle and passing through the local villages.
The mouth of the river Purón:
The mouth of the river is situated to the east of the village of Andrín. The best place to see this tidal estuary is fom the cliffs on the right hand side , close to the coastal path, which comes from Puertas de Vidiago. A typical river of the cantabric zone, the river Purón is both born and enters the sea in the borough of Llanes. The birth or source of the river can be found at the feet of the Sierra del Cuera, only 15 kilometres from its mouth. It is possible to walk the route of the river Purón, beginning in the village of Purón.
Beaches, the sea and water temperature:
The tide goes through a full cycle every 12 hours, more or less, making a total of two low tides and two high tides every 24 hours. There is about 4 metres difference between the low and high tides, when there is a full moon and 1.5 metres when there is a new moon. The water temperature varies between 11 ºC in winter and 19 ºC in summer. These temperatures are subject to changes according to the presence of warmer or cooler currents in the sea.
BEACHES:
Llanes has the greatest number of beaches of any municipality in Asturias. The beaches are situated along the 56km of coastline in the borough of Llanes. There are beaches to suit every taste: near the town and well populated, out in the wilds and seldom visited, large, small, open and enclosed, sheltered or open to the weather, with or without a river, sandy, rocky etc. Year after year the beaches of Llanes are distinguished by the blue flag award. In addition, the beach at Toró has been awarded the Q for Quality award.

LLanes duplex.
We had a lovely time in these duplexes - they are very, very convenient for the town and the beautiful cliff top paseo. The beds are comfortable and the apartments are fully equipped. As far as we noted, nothing was missing that we might need. LLanes itself is absolutely lovely and an ideal coastal town in which to stay if visiting Los Picos de Europa or the Asturian beaches.
