Setting
Mediterraneo Relais-Gym, Pool & Spa is located in Agropoli, one of the most famous and beautiful towns of Cilento in the province of Salerno. Agropoli, which takes its name from Acropolis, the "high city" of the National Park of Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni, is a beautiful village south of Salerno. The crystal clear sea of the Bay of Trentova and the coast in front of the San Marco seafront make it one of the seaside resorts awarded the 'Bandiera Blu Free' recognition, which attests to the cleanliness of the seas, the protection of the environment and the efficiency of tourism-related services. The Blue Flag also flies over the tourist port, which is the largest on the coast south of Salerno with about 1,200 berths. Agropoli is also the "gateway" to the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the "Tresino-Trentova" is Agropoli's most uncontaminated area of extraordinary natural and scenic value. The millenary history, which can still be felt in the ancient Angevin-Aragonese castle, the culture, the sport, the true flavours of the Mediterranean Diet, the proximity to the motorway and to the great centres of attraction in Campania such as Paestum at only 8 km, Castellabate at 13 km and Elea-Velia at about 34 km, are the ingredients that make Agropoli an enchanting and suitable place to live all year round. The property is about 60 km from Salerno, 83 km from Amalfi, 88 km from Pompeii, 115 km from Naples Capodichino Airport and less than 30 km from Pontecagnano Airport. The property is located in a rapidly expanding area, close to all primary and secondary services, businesses such as holiday homes, B&Bs, restaurants, bars, shops and other everyday infrastructures which are about 1 km away.
Activities and attractions
- Agropoli Medieval Village: small, beautiful and characteristic, made up of small streets and narrow alleys where you can see the small shops and restaurants in the area. It is possible to eat typical Cilento dishes and much more in these places, such as pasta with beans and mussels, basket pizzas and cuoppi.
- Castello Aragonese: small but very beautiful, well cared for, with an exhibition of paintings in some rooms, both above and below ground, spectacular views, parking, and an entrance ticket at a very reasonable cost.
- Baia di Trentova: clear water, free and quiet beach. Free parking a short walk from the beach. Climbing the cliff there is a breathtaking view.
- Lancellotti Ranch: for wonderful sunset rides in the Agropoli hills, wonderful views and great horses!
- Scoglio di San Francesco: located between the port of Agropoli and Trentova Bay, close to the little church of the same name, down a path to the beach, just a few minutes walk.
The small beach of San Francesco is located in front of the rock with the cross where legend has it that St Francis of Assisi spoke to the fish. It is a little piece of paradise frequented mainly by locals, the water is crystal clear with beautiful colours.
- The harbour: Agropoli's small harbour is located just below the splendid upper town, and fortunately it was built in such a way as not to encroach on the architecture of the village. It is well maintained and clean, with paid parking, nice walks and many pleasant little places. At the end of the pier, the recently built statue of St Mary of Constantinople watches over the town.
- Gli Scaloni: a monumental flight of steps that serves as a major road junction and is itself a noteworthy attraction. This is the main climb in the centre of Agropoli which, developing from the flat shopping area, leads directly to the historic village at the 'upper' end of the town. The steps, which are spacious and in good condition, extend the entire width of the slope, bordered on either side by various buildings. At the end of the path is the splendid gateway to the village; the structure, integrated into the walls, has two arches, the primary one surmounted by the coat of arms of the Dukes of San Felice. At the top there are five stone merlons with a decorative function. The view towards the port is magnificent.
- Palazzo Civico delle Arti: A small museum, but rich in historical and cultural artefacts of great importance, steeped in often legendary stories about the town and its neighbours.
- Chiesa Madre dei SS. Pietro e Paolo: this church has very ancient origins, but over time it has undergone numerous renovations that have inevitably altered its appearance. The main door, on which the bronze sculptures of Peter and Paul have been placed, is characteristic. The interior is richly decorated, but without a feeling of heaviness. Next to the entrance is a non-accessible underground section protected by barriers and floor-to-ceiling windows; the wooden ceiling is also beautiful, contributing to a more intimate and cosy atmosphere. On the outside, a didactic panel provides some useful information about the history and characteristics of the building.
